I am very pleased with this rack.the only thing I do not like is that to install the rack you have to hand tighten it to your roof rack.I would have thought they would have a quick release latch or something.I guess I'm just lazy.I reccoment this product!

Thule XADAPT1 Rapid Aero Bar Adapter Review

Thule XADAPT1 Rapid Aero Bar Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a 2009 Xterra with factory crossbars and according to Thule I needed the Xadapt3 optional package to attach my Glide and Set kayak carrier.Well, when I got the Xadapt3 and followed the instructions, I noticed that the longer 80mm bolts were too long and didn't allow the carrier to be tightened down because the threads on the 80mm bolts only went about an inch up and not the entire length of the bolt. The 60mm and 50mm bolts that came with my kayak carrier were too short and Thule doesn't sell a 70mm bolt or a 80mm bolt that is threaded all the way to the top of the bolt.I called up Thule but all I got was a message saying to leave a message and they would return my call.Well, wouldn't you know it, Thule never bothered to return my call.I eventually had to rig up something myself to secure the Glide and Set kayak carrier to my factory crossbars.

Shame on Thule for listing products that aren't compatible and for the worst customer service ever.Although I'm not sure you can call it bad customer service if you don't even get to talk with anyone, more like no customer service at all.

Yakima Hull Raiser Aero (4038) Review

Yakima Hull Raiser Aero
Average Reviews:

Yakima has great products and this is no exception. It works in the manner for which it was designed. There are no provisions for utilizing the SKS locking system.

After using it several times, I believe the extra money spent on the Yakima BowDown Kayak Carrier is a better choice, at least for my type of use. The fold down feature on the BowDown and the ability to lock them on the roof racks offers more safety and security.

Thule Glide & Set - 2 saddles Review

Thule Glide & Set - 2 saddles

I was not sure which type of rooftop carrier to purchase to transport my new kayak.I was expecially concerned because I am 5'4" and have to lift a kayak to the top of a RAV4. The carrier was easy to install on my factory installed mount and my boat slides on and off with ease. (I do carry a small step stool to make it easier to tie-down the boat.) This product comes with quick draw bow and stern tie downs so you do not need to order a separate set unless you want to have a spare. (note: In putting together the rack - the directions indicated using the longest set of screws/bolts - but the shorter ones were much better for my vehicle.) This was a great purchase for me - easy to install and easy to use.

The Glide & Set can be attached to almost any rack system, factory or otherwise, and has everything you need to carry your kayak right out of the box. Thule 897XT Hullavator Kayak Roof Rack Mount Carrier Review

Thule 897XT Hullavator Kayak Roof Rack Mount Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've seen many video clips on the net introducing this product (search youTube) so I will skip the functions of it.Lifting my 17' kayak onto my CR-V roof is not something enjoyable, so I bite the bullet.I had to abandoned my factory cross bar and installed the Thule Aero Rapid bars (Thule square and Yakima round will also work but the Aero bar looks much nicer) to accommodate that. This is needed for the load bar to extend 4 to 8 inch beyond the foot, my factory bar will not do that.So after sinking in about $700 I got this going. The installation was not difficult; they even included a DVD with installation instructions. It seems the Hullavator is designed with the square bar in mind. The adaptation to the Aero bars looks like an afterthought. They gave you 4 thin plastic clear films per arm to protect the contact points.A square bar would fit nicely under the mounting bar.But for the Aero bar there were just 4 contact points; I don't even want to tighten the screws too much because of that.

I know before hands that the added height to my CR-V will not clear my garage door; so keep that in mind. The shorter cradle can barely makes it; the bottom taller cradle just simply won't.Now Thule has the Hull-a-port PRO which has a cradle/carrier that will fold, you would think they could have that feature on this $440 product, right? That will sure let me drive my CR-V into my garage without taking it off.The DVD suggest that you take the whole arm assembly off when entering a low clearance garage and states that it is easy.. Ah, it was not that easy, the arms are heavy and putting and removing the pivot pins through the holes can be tricky.I think I will just take the cradles off for now.

Another thing is the Aero bars are nice looking but this Hullavator is not; two big gray boxes without much aero dynamics are sitting on my car roof.. They did pack a lot of mechanisms in there so I guess there is not much room for improvements in that regard.Oh, also be careful not to hit your head, it sticks out just enough to get you. on the other hand it was a good thing that it leave more space on the rack for other things. I moved the front cross bar to in between the front and back doors to avoid it.I can see some other car may not have that choice.

Enough whining I guess the benefits are exceeding the shortcommings so it is a keeper for now.

Thule 878XT Set-to-Go Rooftop Kayak Carrier Review

Thule 878XT Set-to-Go Rooftop Kayak Carrier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased these racks last December and installed them on my van. After a while I noticed that the arms that support the rubber slings that are designed to support the kayak would drop down, resulting in the kayak resting more or less on the rack cross bars, instead of being supported by the slings. The problem is made worse by the fact that the sling material is very grippy-great for holding the kayak in place, but making it very difficult to actually get your boat into the racks. With 2 people loading a boat, you can drop the kayak from above, but the kayak needs to be raised up off the grippy slings to adjust its position fore and aft. The boat will absolutely not slide while in the racks. The only way to load a kayak by yourself is to put a towel on the rear saddle (slings), so the boat can slide on the towel, and shove the boat forward with a strong heave. Again, to adjust fore and aft, you need to haul down on the rear of the kayak to get it off of the front rack in order to re-position it.
I was pretty much resigned to dealing with these shortcomings using the work-arounds noted above, until the weather turned hot. Now when I strap the kayak down, the ill-fitting racks push into my plastic boat, deforming it. This is a known issue with roto-molded plastic boats, which is why I bought $140 racks in the first place. I have contacted Thule; they said talk to Amazon, because I bought the racks from them! A very conscientious Amazon rep is going to talk to Thule to try to see what can be done. Incidently, I talked with an employee at my local kayak shop, and he just rolled his eyes, "Yeah, I get the same complaint from everybody that buys this rack." I recommend potential buyers look at Yakima products before buying.
And now the rest of the story:
The conscientious Amazon customer service rep called Thule on Friday, couldn't reach the appropriate person, and called me back to let me know that she would try again on Monday. She called me Monday morning, after reaching Thule with the rep's name. I called him, and he seemed surprised to learn of the problem. He said he could not refund my $$$, but would happily send me another of their products. After re-visiting Thule's site,I picked the 835 Hull-a-port Pro as a replacement. Thanks to Amazon and Thule for helping me correct the Problem!
Mike

SportRack - Abr511 - J-style kayak carrier Review

SportRack - Abr511 - J-style kayak carrier

These J-Racks seem to work well. After 1,000 miles of banging around throughout New England these J-Racks have done what they are inteded to do.Why pay more for Thule racks when these are just as good? And since Thule owns SportRack, you really are getting a Thule product without paying extra for the name.

My only complaint lies with the length of the supplied straps - they were about 6 inches too short for my 28" wide kayaks. The straps are equivalent quality to any you'd purchse in the store, they are just too short for wider kayaks.

Yakima Mako Saddles Rooftop Kayak Carrier with Straps with Tie-Downs Review

Yakima Mako Saddles Rooftop Kayak Carrier with Straps with Tie-Downs
Average Reviews:

Yakima Mako saddles rule!

I can understand the impulse to save a few bucks by purchasing the landsharks or another brands saddles but don't do it.Why pay $3,000.00 for a fiberglass kayak and then beat the hull to death on your roof or worse yet lose the boat on the highway.

Yakima mako saddles adjust to many different hull shapes, hold the boat very securely and provide a bit of cushion for the boat over bumps.I have used these saddles on several different fiberglass and poly boats and have been extremely pleased with the hull contact.I have not seen hull abrasions and roughening at the site of contact that occurs with other saddles. While the slight movement of the boat while traveling takes some getting used too - this is the saddle flexing, not the boat moving in the saddles - this action gives the boat a bit of cushion on 4x4 or rough roads.Very secure at highway speeds.

Great product that should last you years and years.

Product Description:
Tired of pain-in-the-rear kayak carriers that take up a ton of space while functioning poorly? Turn to the Yakima Mako Saddles rooftop kayak carrier, which employs a scoop-shaped cradle design that fits virtually any hull shape. Suitable for sea kayaks, recreational kayaks, and whitewater boats, the carrier includes a set of Dynaflex pads that grip the boat hull securely, along with a tightening strap that gives you complete control over the grip. The padded buckle, meanwhile, protects both your boat and your vehicle from unsightly scratches.
Thanks to the bundled bow/stern tie-down straps, your kayak will stay incredibly stable whether you're cruising down a country road or a busy highway. An ideal companion for Yakima's HullyRollers or Multimount accessories, the carrier works with round, square, and most factory crossbars (the latter requires the Multimounts) and carries a one-year warranty.
