(More customer reviews)It was really easy to put together and use.It was well packed - it emerged unscathed from a very scathed box.The steel seems thin until you relaize that it is just carrying bikes, not a trailor.It is strong enough and doesn't weigh a ton.

However...It comes in three main pieces that you bolt together.The resulting rack does exactly what it is supposed to.And it is solid.That's almost enough.The problem is that a thief must remove, at most, two bolts to steal your bikes.I used some Locktite on the bolts and cured that little failing.Now the bolts can't come out and the rack is about perfect.

(More customer reviews)I have used this bike rack for three years and it is still working great.The fact that it lowers makes loading my bike easy.The rubber straps on the rack are OK, however I always use softride velcro straps for added holding power.The rack is sturdy and gives a quiet ride and it is nice that the bars fold down out of the way so the bars are not sticking out when parking in the garage or at the bike park area.If three or four bikes are carried I suggest just loading the bikes without lowering the bars so you will not have to lift all the bikes at the same time.It's a good bike rack made with good materials and I expect many more years of service from my softride bike rack.

Allen Deluxe 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack for Vehicles with Rear Mounted Spare Tire (2-Inch Receiver) Review

(More customer reviews)I was very disappointed to find that this rack does not work with side hinged rear doors. It only works with hatch style rear doors. No where on the packaging or in the manual is this mentioned. I quickly put the rack together (very easy to do so) and was quite pleased at how solid it was. I then put it on my 2006 Hummer H3. So far, so good. Then, I went to test the mechanism that allows the rack to fold down so the rear door can be opened. I folded it down, but was stunned to find that my rear door only opened about 5 inches before hitting the bottom area of the rack (yes--even with the rack folded down). Surely, I thought, I must have installed it incorrectly. But, I hadn't. I then called Allen, and spoke to someone there who very readily admitted that the fold-down mechanism does not function well with side hinged rear doors. Oddly, he wouldn't admit that the rack is useless for such vehicles because "technically, the rack still works--you can put bikes on it". He suggested that I carry around a pair of 3/4 inch closed wrenches, and "simply take the rack completely off when the rear door needs to be accessed". I thought he was kidding, but he wasn't. Of course, this is not a viable solution. Oddly enough, the folks at Allen decided to use an image of a vehicle with a side hinged rear door on the box. You can actually just look at that picture and see that the rack would not work with that vehicle.

I would have given this product one star, but added a star to reflect its strength and the ease at of putting it together.

(More customer reviews)I've used this rack about twice a week for six months now.Works perfectly with the hitch I had mounted on my Civic.I'm in and out of my trunk often for work, and this rack allows for plenty of clearance.Before I bought this on Amazon, I checked out the really expensive brands in the bike stores, and this Hollywood rack seems just as well made for less than half the cost.
As a side note, I bought a small steel combination lock at Target that I use in place of my hitch pin - could be used with any rack.Certainly not a guarantee the rack won't disappear, but it's a little extra security for a few bucks so thought I'd mention it.

We put 3 bikes on it coming back across the U.S. and it worked very well, with little movement as we kept an eye on it in the mirrors periodically. We were amazed that nothing moved much. It is a good and sturdy product. We've not tried 4 bikes on it, and it would be tight, but manageable I'm sure since we got 3 on, and 2 of them were side by side.

Heininger 3010 Advantage SportsRack TiltAWAY Bike Rack Review

(More customer reviews)This is my first hitch mounted rack but my fourth bike rack purchase.I researched many of the racks before purchasing this one but ultimately, as an occasional rider, price was the deciding factor.If you are looking for a convenient, easy-on, easy-off rack, this isn't the one for you.

PROS:
- Solid construction
- Relatively lighter weight than other 4 bike hitch racks
- Tilts 45 degrees at the base to allow for hatch access
- Easy rubber strap mechanism allows for simple and secure bike placement/removal
- Allows for both 2" and 1.25" hitch configurations with included adapter
- "Anti-wobble device" is a wingnut-type screw that works well; stable at speed

CONS:
- Lacks "quick release."Excessive use of locking pins to secure all bolts for all moving parts. The pins add time to the process, can sometimes pinch your fingers, yet they are essential to hold the bolts in place.There is no obvious place to put these pins when you are working the rack.
- Threaded bolt requires basic tools for hitch install (but it is quite secure)
- Tilting the rack 45 degrees is a four step process: 1) remove the pin, 2) pull the retaining bolt, 3) lift another locking bolt, 4) pull the rack while lifting the locking bolt.
- When tilting the rack it is clear one portion of the rack is slightly oversized and causes quite a bit of friction between pieces.This makes the tilting action graceful, but there is definite metal-on-metal scraping when the rack is tilted or placed back in position.
- No ability to add an integrated bike lock to the rackSUMMARY:

The Advantage SportsRack TiltAWAY Bike Rack is an average 4 bike, hitch-mounted rack. Out of the box, the assembly process took about 15 minutes. Installed, the rack is stable at freeway speeds and inspires confidence in the security of your bikes. As noted above, the biggest disappointment is the use of locking pins throughout the rack. They require a good deal of force for insertion and removal. These could have been avoided with more expensive self-locking bolts (with thumb-press unlock), but that would have raised the price of the rack to the level of costlier rivals.My wife and I agree it is easier to install and remove than trunk-style racks, and the distance between the car and rack eases any vehicle damage concerns.The SportsRack TiltAWAY is a fine rack for occasional use but the lack of a quick release for tilting precludes it from staying on the car when not in use.

NOTE: 200 lb max for 1.25" hitches, including the rack - means you will probably not be able to carry 4 full size bikes on any Class I/II 1.25" hitch, no matter the rack

(More customer reviews)I have been very impressed with this rack.It is very sturdy, doesn't wiggle or rattle while driving without bikes.The new clasp allows you to swing it out and back with bikes on it however, it is very difficult to get the pin back because it it is a very tight fit.This may wear in.I have friends with more expensive Thule and Yakima racks and the quality and functionality of the Allen 552R is on par with those brands.The rack is very light and easy to use.
I have driven about 600 miles using this rack with no problems.

(More customer reviews)I agree with other review; plate that is suppose to secure bike to rack is for smaller framed bikes, which many bikes today are not smaller diameter bikes...wasted my money, ok for short hauls (5-10 miles), used it on one long haul and felt as if i needed to stop all the time and check it.had a similar bike rack that was excellent with one plate that secured all bikes instead of multiple plates and screws....very disappointed...would not recommend and should specify that it DOES NOT come with a hitch pin!!!!!!

(More customer reviews)I bought this rack at least 10 years ago, possibly 11 or 12. It has actually lasted longer than the Explorer I bought it for. I have it on a new Silverado now and it works like a champ. The release was originally appealing because the Explorer had the hatch style door and it allowed me to get into the cargo area without taking the bikes off. Now with the truck, I can still let down the bed gate and not have to take the bikes off the rack.
I have carried everything from mountain bikes to kids bikes to my big fat beach cruiser and it has had no problems with bowing or swaying. It's made out of some type of heavy duty iron with very solid welding. It's not lightweight, but it's not a workout either.

Now the best part: I recently realized that I stripped one of the turn knobs that allows the bars to go up and down.I called customer service and they allowed me to drive over to their facility and pick up a replacement.How cool was that? A lot of these manufacturers will not sell directly to the public, and they did with no problem. What's even better is; as I was standing out front putting on the part, the owner happened to come out to see if I needed help. He even gave me my money back stating stating that since I drove all the way over there and it was a little part, he wouldn't charge. I couldn't believe it! I tried to refuse, but he kept giving me back the payment!I was shocked!

The replacement part works great and I am a loyal customer for life. That type of service is unheard of these days.I was happy enough to just be able to get the part immediately. I know this rack will last another ten years, and hopefully I will be able to get other items from this company.

(More customer reviews)I've had this rack for since 2002 - has worked well for carrying bikes whether towing my +2000-lbs popup camper or not. I've recommended it to friends, and would buy it again.

Don't use the swing-down feature often, as it's pretty heavy if bikes are loaded. The v-cradles for the bikes don't work as well for the oval tubes on some bikes - especially for really "tall" top tubes. I bought a "cheater" tube for adapting troublesome bikes (ladies frame, etc.) to fit the rack.

The three screws to fasten the top plate are a little tedious, but I can clamp it as tight as I want, can accomodate top tubes of varous diameters (the top plate flexes), and I have never seen them loosen even after several hours of highway driving.

Re: earlier comments on chains: I tow with a minivan (towing package including load-leveling). I had to get safety chain extensions so I could tow my popup camper. To kee the chains off the road, I use a bungee cord from the crossing point to the trailer tongue.
