Thule 665C Transporter Combi Hitch-Mount Cargo Box Review

Thule 665C Transporter Combi Hitch-Mount Cargo Box
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Thule hitch-mount "hard-shell" cargo carrier I envisioned as just what was needed to double the effective size of my 2007 Toyota Corolla's trunk. It has worked out exactly as expected. It's 13 cu. ft. of space doubles the a little more than 13 cu. ft. space of the trunk.

Everything was in the box (for both 1 1/4" and 2" hitch receivers), shipping was free (and pretty quick) in addition to $40 or so off the list price by buying from Amazon, assembly and installation was a snap (I already had a 1 1/4" receiver mounted on my Corolla along with the flat plug type wiring necessary for the included lights), and it has done just what I needed on a 3000 mile trip in the West in May - haul my camping equipment while still having the car trunk available for everything else I needed.

Only "issue" is just what I expected from putting such a contrapation on the back of my relatively low slung Corolla, i.e., it will occasionally drag when going up or down a sharp incline. However, this is usually quite avoidable by paying attention by going slowly up and down such inclines (like pulling into or out of a gas station or convenience store) and taking such inclines at an angle (i.e., not perpendicular to the street).

A major upside of these type carriers is that one gets less wind drag and better mileage from such this configuration versus the high wind drag of roof mounted carriers.Evidence?I got over 41 mpg on my noted 3000 mile trip!I also does not obstruct the view out the back window at all essentially.

About Thule
To say that Thule's beginnings in the U.S. were humble would be an understatement. Founding member Ake Skeppner sold products at windsurf competitions on the New England shoreline, exhibited the product line at a number of different trade shows, and even canvassed local retailers in the greater New York area, all from his "office"--a now-famous station wagon. Initial success was found in the small but growing sport of windsurfing where a strong, reliable roof rack was an indispensable piece of equipment. This was quickly followed by success in the ski business where Thule's Swedish heritage certainly helped the product gain rapid acceptance.
By the mid-1980s, the company sold products directly to ski and windsurfing shops but sold through distributors to address the large and growing bike business. A risky decision was made to terminate these distributor relationships and sell direct to retailers through a network of independent sales representatives. Much of the company's market success today can be traced to that decision. Shortly after, Ake hired an engineer and set up a small assembly plant in Elmsford, New York in order to design and manufacture bike carriers that would offer the features demanded by the U.S. consumer and compete effectively with other racks on the market.
The company has since grown rapidly through product innovation, a commitment to quality, and the continuance of a strong entrepreneurial spirit as well as continuing to evolve their products to meet the needs of users.

Allen Deluxe 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) Review

Allen Deluxe 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack

It was really easy to put together and use.It was well packed - it emerged unscathed from a very scathed box.The steel seems thin until you relaize that it is just carrying bikes, not a trailor. It is strong enough and doesn't weigh a ton.

However...It comes in three main pieces that you bolt together. The resulting rack does exactly what it is supposed to.And it is solid. That's almost enough. The problem is that a thief must remove, at most, two bolts to steal your bikes.I used some Locktite on the bolts and cured that little failing. Now the bolts can't come out and the rack is about perfect.

About Allen Bike Racks
In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.
Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world.

I bought this item after scouring the internet for a suitable replacement for the hitch lost to my Master Cycle trailer. This item is a perfect match to the original. I wouldn'd doubt that they were made in the same factory in China. Price with shipping was reasonable too.

I tried a friend's very similar to this. Also bought a different type that uses the rubber straps for securing. I prefer these plates that screw down. Also, my friend's bolts are shorter, so with bikes with fat bars, you had to use an adapter. Still have to use adapter for one 24" bike, but the 26" bike has enough clearance between bars to slide the bottom plate through. Just wish it would swing down for easier access to liftgate.

Hollywood Racks HR9200 Traveler 5-Bike Hitch Mount Rack

We purchased the 5-bike rack and it is working out pretty well.It is challenging to get all the bikes on the rack only because of the way they make bike frames these days, but you can adjust the rack to hold the bike up in any different number of ways because of extra connecting straps and supports. The company sent the flag (which wasn't included in the original packaging)after we called their 800 number quickly and free of charge. The only problem with the rack is that when you travel on gravel or dirt roads, it bounces around quite a bit.Overall, it is a great product.

Thule 684 Terrapin Hitch Mount Luggage Box Review

Thule 684 Terrapin Hitch Mount Luggage Box

I must have shopped 3 months for the best price on this storage box. I really wanted to support the loacal shop here in Denver, Rack Attack, but after repeated attempts to get them to match the before tax price of the Amazon product, I decided to just buy it from Amazon. It was also annoying that if I was willing to pay the extra money for their box that they wanted to charge me an additional amount to have them assemble and install it. In all, I saved about $80 by buying it from Amazon.

I could not have been more happy with the purchase experience. It was delivered as agreed and in perfect condition.

The box itself took about 2 hours to assemble and install. Not very difficult, but certainly time consuming. Also, unless you are okay with semi-heavy lifting, you should probably do this with another person. The box fit perfectly into my 2007 4-Runner hitch. The only problem was that I needed an adapter from 7 pin to 4 pin to get the brake lights to work. I had to buy this from Wal-Mart for $18.

Lastly, after installation, only one of the brake lights was working. After about 20 minutes of inspection, I realized that when I was assebling the box I had accidentally disconnected one of the brake light wire assemblies. It's easy to do if you're not careful...somewhat of a design flaw. Once reconnected, the box worked like a charm.

I am very happy with the purchase and recommend it to anyone looking for a little extra cargo space for road trips.

Lund 601019 Fold Down Bike Carrier, 2 Bikes Review

Lund 601019 Fold Down Bike Carrier, 2 Bikes

My 2 favorite features on this bike rack were the built in locks on the carrier unit and the adjustable bar that moves from 90 degrees to 45 degrees by just removing a pin (the pin attached by a wire so you can't lose it.)I am able to swing open the back door enough to shift luggage around or let the dog jump in and out.Only drawback was the slight mark that I saw on my tire cover which I was able to remove. It's great to be able to lock the bikes in place for times when I have to park and step away, though technically, if someone pulled the bar out of the hitch they could take it all which is the case with any rack I suppose.

The $95 price was great. I almost bought it from another online store for $60 more than Amazon plus they had it in stock with free shipping so I got it in 2 days with my AmazonPrime membership. It's not heavy and it's easy to take on and off when not in use and store in the garage.I would definitely recommend it.

Swagman XP Fold Down 5-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) Review

Swagman XP Fold Down 5-Bike Hitch Mount Rack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I needed a 5 bicycle rack that could handle all our family bikes, including our 3 children's (5, 7 and 10 yrs. old) for our yearly vacation. This one seemed to be pretty versatile, not requiring additional bars for most bikes.
While it took some work to make all bikes fit just right (especially the little ones), we made the 4 hour trip to the mountains just fine; no excessive movement (though it does sway a little), no damage to the bicycles (I used pipe insulating foam tube pieces in a couple of spots where bikes rubbed each other) and an overall uneventful trip, even on some not-so-smooth roads. Getting the kids' bikes on was kinda tricky (the littlest one had to travel upside down!) but it worked out fine--I don't think it would have been so with some of the other 2-bar models.
However, if I had to load all 5 bikes on a regular basis I'd probably be looking for a different option. Also, something this rack (and most others too) could use is some kind of reflective finish on the end of the tube... can never be too safe!

Allen Deluxe 5-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) Review

Allen Deluxe 5-Bike Hitch Mount Rack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the Allen Deluxe 5-bike rack in November 2009.I spent about 15 hours researching bike racks on the Internet and at several retail outlets.I settled on the Allen after comparing features and value between five of the major competitors.I mounted the rack to a 2009 Honda Odyssey.I've used the hitch to carry two adult and two kids bikes for several local trips and one 200+ mile trip. The bikes loaded easily (even the bike used by my 4 year old). The couplings swivel, allowing small bikes to attach with out a crossbar.I added a few bungee cords for my own peace of mind on the longer trip and to reduce sway. The only flaw with the product thus far is that I was unable to put the pin back in the hole after I tilted the rack with the bikes attached. The weight of the bikes appeared to put too much downward pressure on the rack causing misalignment of the holes.A longer pin that could be manipulated better or a second person pushing up on the rack may help. The rack was very easy to put together and install and shipping by Amazon was very fast. The rack has already paid for itself in the enjoyment my family has had biking on several great bike trails with family and friends.

Allen Deluxe 3-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (1.25 or 2-Inch Receiver) Review

Allen Deluxe 3-Bike Hitch Mount Rack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this bike rack. The price is very reasonable and its build-quality I consider top-notch with all holes and welds being quite precise. The design has clever features that were new to me, such as being able to fold down the bike support arm when not in use so one doesn't accidentally run into it and also the ability to fold down the whole rack allowing quick and easy access through the rear door. The strap cinching system seemed cheap and goofy at first but after using it a few times I've now become quite adept at strapping and unstrapping the bikes to where it only takes a few seconds for me to do so.I now feel its quite clever in that this strapping system will accommodate any size bike tube (unlike some other bike racks I've had in the past). Its important to note that the spacing between the supports is quite wide at 14" and that might limit its use for smaller bikes, as our adult bikes just barely fit (with <2" to spare).I did run into an issue that I've noted that some other Amazon reviewers (reviewing other similar model Allen bike racks) had alluded to.All hitch mounted bike racks will wobble to some extent and that's why most have some sort of anti-wobble system that basically draws the bike rack tight to one side of the receiver to prevent it wobbling.Well, the anti-wobble bolt that is supplied with the bike rack works well for a 2" receiver hitch, however if you have a 1-1/4" receiver it won't fit unless you drill out the hole on one side of your receiver... it will need to be slightly larger than 1/2".If you don't want to do that then you'll need to buy an 'after-market' anti-wobble bolt. That's when I ran into the problem that anti-wobble bolts don't seem to exist for 1-1/4" receivers... oh, there are a huge variety of choices for 2" receivers but not the 1-1/4"... I don't know why. There are brand specific anti-rattle pins for 1-1/4" but none of them will work with these Allen bike racks. Finally, after much searching, I finally found one (the only one on the internet I've got to believe), however it was also a locking pin, which was okay with me.I got it from a site called [ etrailer ]... do this search on [ Anti-Rattle with Lock for 1-1/4" Trailer Hitches ]It's code#63147 and basically costs $25 and with shipping totals out at a hefty $30 but was well worth it for me.It works perfectly and is very high quality.I've read reviews here on Amazon by others with 1-1/4" receivers who couldn't seem to find a 1-1/4" locking pin (evidently even Allen's own won't work!!!)... well this one is both an anti-wobble as well as a locking pin and works on Allen bike racks. So I hope this bit of info helps those with 1-1/4" receivers like myself. And if I've managed to help you please check the YES under helpful checkbox below.

Okay I've got to add this edit... I just got through another search of that website 'etrailer' and did find Curt makes an anti-rattle pin (no lock) for a 1-1/4" receiver code#F-315 that appears will work with the Allen bike rack, its $11 less than the locking style. As far as I could find, after extensive web searching, these are the only two anti-rattle (anti-wobble) 1-1/4" hitch receiver pins I could locate anywhere that will work with Allen bike racks. So if anyone who reads this knows of another please add it in a comment as I believe others might find it helpful to have choices.
